Sorry, I couldn't resist. It's Super Bowl Sunday, and I'm celebrating with my own super bowl—a DIY leather bowl I made from scrap leather! It was easy to make, so if you feel so inclined, I encourage you to make one, too.
I've been seeing great leather catch-all bowls popping up at cool places, like this one at the Ace Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. I love it. And my first thought when I saw it was, "I can make that."
As it turns out, I could. Or something like it anyway.
You can shape leather if you dip it in hot water, drape it over the shape you want, and let it dry. So pick a bowl you have, with a shape you like, and you'll use this as your mold.
I used one of my small cereal bowls, which belongs to my tiny collection of H.F. Coors restaurant grade bowls, made in Inglewood, California, that I picked up years ago in Venice, California, at a place on Abbot Kinney called Dishes A La Carte. The store is no longer around, but they used to sell new dishes and plates rejected by manufacturers as seconds due to imperfections. I used to love shopping there!
Boil a small pot of water, and remove from the heat. Using tongs, carefully dip your piece of leather into the water and let it sit for a few minutes. Then, using the tongs again, remove it from the water and let it drip dry for a few seconds. You don't want to handle it until it cools a little.
Take your bowl and turn it upside down.
Stretch the leather over it.
Clamp the leather down over the edges of the bowl, and secure with a rubber band.
Unless you are trying for a ruffled edge, be careful to smooth down the leather under the rubber band.
Place the inverted bowl over a jar and let it dry for about three days.
Once it's completely dry, place another bowl over it.
Trace a line all the way around.
You'll use this line as a guide to trim off the edges.
Remove the clamps and detach your leather bowl. It could be a little stuck. Just peel it off. You can't hurt it.
Then, just trim it down to size, along the line you drew.
I suggest using it for your keys. It may help you remember where you left them, since you left them IN THE COOLEST BOWL EVER that you made yourself.
Oh, and one more thing. GO PATRIOTS! #superbowlsunday #ilovenewengland #mygrandfathersfromconnecticut
